"My consort...is..."

It's all clear to me now. Why Viktor didn't want to tell me any of this.

Living through all this must have been unbearably painful for him, spanning the years of guilt where he was separated from his brother while in the Russian circus with his mother, to the shock of discovering what had become of him.

I didn't believe him when he said the poison wasn't out of mercy. Viktor liked everyone to see him as dangerous.

Ansel, meanwhile, had his heart pinned to his sleeve. His eyes were full of sympathy. He felt guilt over his brother too.

"It is what it is," Viktor said coldly. "But now you know. Since Max still lives, at some point, he will be drawn to you with increasing...fervor. And Rohan sees no problem with that. So I am in his way by protecting you from my brother."

"But Rohan invested in your business and your presidential run?" Ansel tapped his fingers on the table, trying to think it all through.

"Yes. I was useful to him then. Before the queens stirred."

"And Max is...my consort..." I don't know why I was repeating what he'd already told me. "Is he really that bad? You said he can't speak? Is he just an animal in a man's body?"

"He's much smarter than an animal. But I expect he will feel a powerful mating instinct toward his queen. He's very strong and could easily overpower Ansel physically, much less you, and since he is a consort, I don't know if your powers would have any effect on him He's more bestial but he just can't change between the two. He's trapped.”

“Is he in pain? Could I help?”

“He might hurt you first,” Viktor said. “You are the most important thing.”

"I meeean..." Ansel looked at me.

I knew what Ansel was thinking. There was nothing necessarily fatal about a big strong bestial man who really wanted me.

"What--what is that look?" Viktor sounded like he was two seconds away from knocking our heads together. "He isn't the brother I knew. He was abandoned and abused and messed with in ways I don't even know the details of, and I'm afraid that he will rape you if he is ever given the opportunity, and that Rohan would let it happen as part of the prophecy. Whatever porn soundtrack is playing in your heads, it is not that."

"Okay, but I'm just saying that I'm not going to discriminate against a fellow consort just because he got caught up in experiments."

"I hate to add this, but feline sex is also painful for the female," Viktor said. "And I certainly did not ask if the animal aspects of him...affected anything, but tigers have a barbed penis and they bite the female's neck to pin her down."

"Whoa, whoa! Okay. Right. I had not thought of that." I fluttered my hands nervously. Now I felt awful for making Viktor bring up his brother's penis, because it was a fair point. Dumb humans were always asking shifters if we ever mated in animal form.
